On November 15, 2017, South Florida Banking Institute held the CFO Financial Panel at Airport Hilton Hotel. This month’s panel was all about opportunities in capital markets and developments across the financial landscape, accounting charges, regulatory relief, corporate tax cuts, and its related issues.

With credit being free for over a decade, financial institutions have been at a challenge, as competition is fierce all throughout the country. The average age of CD deposits has changed within the decade. Scott Hildenbrand stated “Being able to deliver a fixed rate to your client doesn’t necessarily mean you need to have a fixed rate on your balance sheet. Being thoughtful, delivering tools, and having that dialogue with your customers could not only help them on their debt servicing but also bring in some deposits from their perspective too.”

Regarding the standpoint on cyber security, Moderator Frank Gonzalez asked for suggestions and/or perspectives from the speakers in terms for addressing any security issues.

Will Bermudez states “at the end of the day, it’s all about getting your employees engaged and informed so that they can realize when a phishing attack is happening”.

Stan Rubin states “The risk keeps growing in remarkable ways. The weakest link are people. Even things like patch management and its required updates leads up to people. The organizations that are making it tougher for themselves to be infiltrated is why attackers are going to where it is easier. We are really competing amongst ourselves. “

Scott Hildenbrand says “it’s a nightmare-so to speak. The only positive about it, is that it is keeping you nimble and in play in terms of technology. You’re going to be seeing more branch consolidation and savings there will lead high up into cybersecurity and technology.”
