On February 21, 2018, South Florida Banking Institute hosted an interactive discussion on social media and its influence on financial institutions. Guest speaker Ethan Wall, nationally recognized expert in social media and the law, led an informative presentation on the legal aspects of social media.
Wall commenced the evening discussing several social media platforms all while gaging the audiences’ familiarity of the topic. A few of the social media platforms that were examined included Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. Wall stressed the importance of being compliant within social media throughout your financial institutions internet appearance, as well as the importance of monitoring and preserving communications.
Going further, integrating social media within your financial institution is not a question of why- but how. It is very necessary for social media and compliance departments to have risk management policies and procedures in place, as it could be as costly as $16,000 for each noncompliant post. Social media compliance audits, as well as concert and sweepstakes guidelines, and endorsement guidelines should be integrated within your financial institution’s marketing program and training. Depending on the activity and output your department is delivering, your company’s social media content should be recorded weekly to quarterly. Making sure your social media content is collected for the past three years not only preserves your content and utilization, but is just one way to maintain compliance. The utilization of social media not only assists in putting you ahead of the competition, but also helps build your brand, improving your online reputation, and attracts supportive customers.
